Bad Breath: Causes, Treatment, And Prevention

May 26, 2021

Bad breath can literally lower your self-confidence and make you feel awkward. Bad breath, or halitosis, can be terrible and can result in anxiety too. Consuming certain foods, severe diseases, medications, and unhealthy lifestyles are usually the chief causes of halitosis.

Causes

  •       Food: When food substances break inside your mouth, it generates more bacteria and produces an unpleasant odor. When you have foods, like onions, garlic, and spices, they can generate bad breath as well.

During your digestion process, these foods merge with your bloodstream and are carried to your lungs. This affects your breath odor.

  •       Tobacco items: Smoking does give a displeasing mouth odor. Heavy smokers and oral tobacco users have a high risk of gum disease. This is another source of halitosis.
  •       Poor oral regimen: If you don’t brush properly and daily, debris sticks in your mouth, releasing a foul odor. Plaque which is a colorless, sticky film of bacteria develops on your teeth. Plaque disturbs the balance inside your mouth and affects your gums. This eventually advances to Periodontitis (serious gum disease).
  •       Dry mouth: The main role of saliva is to moisten your mouth and rinse away the debris. A dry mouth can cause bad breath because saliva production in the mouth minimizes. Chronic dry mouth can take place because of a complication with your salivary glands and few other diseases.
  •       Medications: Certain drugs can indirectly affect your breath and cause a foul smell by contributing to a dry mouth.
  •       Mouth infections: Damage done during surgical processes can also generate halitosis. The wounds are usually caused by oral surgery, mouth sores, or gum diseases.
  •         Crash diets: If you fast or follow a low-carbohydrate routine, it can result in bad breath. This happens because of the breakdown of fats producing chemicals, termed ketones. These ketones have a very powerful aroma.
  •     Another mouth, nose, and throat condition: Bad breath can also be produced from tiny stones that build in the tonsils. If there is an infection or chronic inflammation inside the nose, sinuses, or throat, it can lead to bad breath as well.
  •       Other causes: Severe health issues, for example, certain cancers, liver failure, and conditions such as metabolic disorders, may cause particular breath odor. This happens because of the chemicals they produce. Children can also suffer bad breath caused by debris, like a food particle stuck in the nostril.

How Bad Breath is treated?

To treat bad breath conditions, your dentist performs an oral exam and Dental Cleaning in maximum cases. If the odor is the result of gum disease, a Periodontist can treat your condition.

What Can I Do to Prevent Bad Breath?

  •         Brush every day twice with fluoride toothpaste.
  •         Clean your tongue with a tongue scraper and floss once daily.
  •         Wash your mouth with the help of an antibacterial mouthwash.
